Business Advisers' Digest (BAD) provides information for business advisers and other professional business intermediaries. It includes a fortnightly e-mail newsletter and access to previous editions of BAD News and supplementary articles. Centre for Entrepreneurial Leadership Clearinghouse on Entrepreneurship Education. This is part of the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) system that was started thirty years ago by the U.S. Department of Education to disseminate information that would not be distributed through normal sources. Click2think provides access to research links on Cambridge's and other high-technology clusters, the internet, venture capital, entrepreneurship and business academia. Cobweb Complete Business Website Information (UK) Compendium of Entrepreneur Programs maintained by the Marshall School of Business Enterweb provides a comprehensive set of links for entrepreneurs to internet sites across the world (Canada) Entreworld Resources for Entrepreneurs provided by the Kauffman Centre (US) Equality North East is a one-stop source of equal opportunities employment information relating to race, gender and disability and related issues such as Work-Life Balance, Recruitment and selection and Harassment and Bullying. It provides fact sheets, a search facility, news items, best practice examples and signposting to other relevant organizations both regional and national. Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research proceedings archive held at Babson college. Global Entrepreneurship Institute. This is a non-profit educational organisation that provides a digital think tank for global entrepreneurs. The Virtual Library provides helpful links to relevant articles around the web and there is also a free weekly email newsletter. Information Centre for Entrepreneurship at Jönköping University Library is an excellent resource. The database of publications is well worth a visit, although it does not appear currently to provide comprehensive searches of journal articles. They describe the service as providing "one of the world's largest collections in the fields of entrepreneurship, innovations and small and medium-sized enterprises. Primarily a resource for research, ICE also has quite a large number of publications for more practical purposes. The collection of printed materials includes books, dissertations, working papers, conference proceedings and periodicals." International Council for Small Business details of publications including links to award winning conference papers from the ICSB World Conference. ISBA list of proceedings from the ISBA National Small Firms Conference. Full versions of the prize winning papers from the 1998 conference are available. International Thematic Network on 'Working on the Fringes: Immigrant Businesses, Economic Integration and Informal Practices'. This is described on the website as "a Work programme under the Targeted Socio-Economic Research (TSER) Programme of the European Commission DG XII (edition 1997, under area III.2) for a Thematic European Network for Exchange of Knowledge and Experiences and under the SCSS Exploratory Grant Scheme, European Science Foundation (ESF) for a European Network for Exchange of Knowledge on the topic of 'Entrepreneurial Cultures in Small and Medium Sized Enterprises' and co-sponsored by the Dutch Foundation for Scientific Research NWO". The site is a helpful resource providing a free electronic newsletter and bibliography on immigrant and ethnic entrepreneurship. Journals list for small business publications maintained by Prof. Jerome Katz's (Saint Louis University) extensive. List is at the end of page. Kingston-Small Business Service Seminar Series. The website introduces the thinking behind the seminar series as: "the promotion of Small and Meduim-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) is central to UK Government economic policy. The 1998 Competitiveness White Paper and more recently the establishment of the Small Business Service (SBS) illustrate the commitment and importance of developing a policy framework and cultivating an environment in which SMEs can flourish and contribute to economic growth. However, policy needs to be informed by high quality research. The aim is to bring together a selection of academics, and advisers from the user community to provide a series of seminars for the staff of the Small Business Service (SBS). The issues they will be addressing are central to the mission of the SBS, are multi-disciplinary and will require a range of knowledge and expertise." Marcus Dejardin from the University of Namur explained that "NEP-ENT is part of the NEP Project. NEP is an announcement service which filters information on new additions to RePEc (Research Papers in Economics) into edited reports... Reports include new working papers and journal articles. Seminar on Business Failure contains "information and research on business failure, bankruptcy and restarting entrepreneurs. Contains the proceedings of an international conference on the importance of adjusting bankruptcy laws in Europe." (Source email) Small Business Advancement National Center archive of recent research proceedings held at the University of Arkansas. Small Business Foresight at the University of Durham Business School provides a helpful list of Bulletins (look to index at left of screen). Small Business Research 2000 provides access to the findings of research to Australian small business. Provided by the Small Business Development Corporation of Western Australia. US Small Business Administration's extensive series of articles on small business management and related issues. Areadata provides consumer and business profile reports that cover census, demographic and market information for any UK location. There is a free-data section that has a range of reports, for example, spending profiles, whos buying on-line and pay profiles. Anbar Management Resources (Emerald) provides a list of coolsites on the web and a list of over 400 management journals with hot-links. It also offers subscription access to the abstracts of over 85,000 articles and fulltext for over 100 titles. Australian Bureau of Statistics is Australia's official statistical organisation. It describes its mission to "assist and encourage informed decision-making, research and discussion within governments and the community, by providing a high quality, objective and responsive national statistical service." The site provides access to key national indicators and other services. Benchmark Index provides with links to national and international benchmarking sites. The Benchmark Index enables businesses of all sizes to compare themselves against data gathered from nearly 2,000 enterprises. There is a facility to compare a company with other companies using a benchmarking sampler based on the Index. Biz/ed is a business and economics service for students, teachers and lecturers. Recent developments include: GNVQ course resources, a series of interactive questions on a variety of topics and arguments supporting and disputing topical issues. Bureau of Labour Statistics (US Department of Labor) provides an overview of economic performance and statistics on inflation, spending, employment, earnings, health and safety, productivity and international comparisons. Business & Management Arena is provided by the publisher Taylor & Francis to give access to a range of information including online abstracts, author resources, related sites and forthcoming conferences. BNET provides a range of business related guides, directories, case-studies, events and links. The information accessible via Bnet is produced by government departments, professional bodies and commercial organisations. Students and academics receive a free subscription. Callsforpapers.com is a source for journal and conference calls in the business area. The objective of the site according to the webmaster "is to simplify the process of investigating research opportunities by providing a single portal to bring together all the information required to make an informed decision.". The site has a section devoted to calls in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Data Archive contains the largest collection of accessible computer readable data in the social sciences and humanities in the United Kingdom. Through these web pages it is also possible to search the catalogues of other national archives for computer readable data. Dictionary of the Social Sciences provided by Athabasca University and the International Consortium for the Advancement of Academic Publication. EcEdWeb is an Economic Education Website provided at the University of Nebraska Omaha Centre for Economic Education. Its mission "is to provide support for economic education in all forms and at all levels." It provides access to a range of helpful links to data, information and teaching materials. Foresight is a UK Government initiative to bring together people, knowledge and ideas to help prepare for the future. This is an excellent site that provides access to a wide range of materials relating to the future of business and society. Many of the reports and articles are relevant to SMEs even if they are not specifically targeted at this group of businesses. Gateway to Educational Materials (GEM) is the key to one-stop, any-stop access to thousands of high quality lesson plans, curriculum units and other education resources on the Internet. GEM is a project of the U.S. Department of Education and is a special project of the ERIC Clearinghouse on Information & Technology. The Small Business Research Portal is a member of the GEM Consortium. Global Idea Bank. This site provides access to socially innovative non-technological ideas and projects. This site is not specifically aimed at small businesses, but there are some relevant sections: Work and Unemployment, Taxation, Economics and Business. HERO is a portal for UK higher education. It describes its aims as "to provide an up-to-date, accurate, and informative database of links to all the key HE websites on the Internet. With information on HE opportunities, institutions and organisations across the UK, HERO will be a gateway for students, researchers, HE staff and businesspeople." International Bibliography of the Social Sciences provides access to a comprehensive database of social science publications. It also offers access to free training materials. International Consortium for the Advancement of Academic Publication provides access to a range of free access electronic journals and other resources. It describes its mission as including "the support and enhancement of scholarly journal production as well as the enhancement of online delivery of course and educational content. ICAAP specializes in developing technology for the delivery of scholarly content." Knowledge@Wharton provides access to a range of business related sources and a bi-wwekly newsletter service. It is organised under 14 categories including innovation and entrepreneurship. The website as including "analysis of current business trends, interviews with industry leaders and Wharton faculty, articles based on the most recent business research, book reviews, conference and seminar reports, links to other web sites and so on. The web site presents information in layers so that users can pursue their interests to whatever depth they wish. An in-depth searchable database of related articles and research abstracts allows access to information through simple mouse clicks." Libris is a Swedish online database that provides access to the catalogue of over 4 million titles and 90,000 articles held by 200 Swedish libraries. Look at bottom at left of screen for English version. The search facilities are well organised and easy to use. Major Market Profiles provides information on a "wide range of consumer, industrial and service sectors" across the world. The website offers a summary of each market for free, but more detailed information requires the purchase of a report. ManagementFirst.com (MCB University Press) provides links to management articles. It has a comprehensive database of management-related articles from academic publications and electronic books. The search engine is very helpful, but the articles are charged. Managerwise.com provides articles, news, forums, book reviews and other resources concerning the theory and practice of business management. Professor Dana's webpage provides links to a range of his publications and his CV. RealSci Classification Index provides free access to a range of electronic journals and resources. It suggests it "radically differs from the existing library and science classification schemes. Its main feateres: up-to-date, dynamic, comprehensive, and hyper-topical. If you have written a paper, say, on cultural diffusion and change, by submitting it to the RSCI Journals collection you will have to select from a number of abstracting journals, including anthropology, cognitive science, linguistics, or ethnic studies. Thus your interdisciplinary work will be published in up to seven ISSN-assigned journals and reach the widest possible academic audience." Regard is a free service that allows searches of social science research funded by the Economic & Social Research Council (UK) RePEc (Research Papers in Economics) is distributed database of free working papers, journal articles and other resources. The database is reported to hold "over 125,000 items of interest: 86,000 working papers, 35,000 journal articles, 650 software components, 1,500 author contact listings and 5,700 institutional contact listings". Research Councils' (UK) joint home page. This explains that the "UK Research Councils are established under Royal Charter to fulfil the objectives set out by Government in the White Paper "Realising our Potential" dated May 1993. Statutory control of the Councils is exercised by the Department of Trade and Industry, supported by the Director-General of Research Councils, within the Office of Science and Technology." The page provides links to: Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, Economic and Social Research Council, Medical Research Council, Natural Environment Research Council, Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council and Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils. Resource Guide for the Social Sciences. A range of resources for social science researchers that focuses on resources funded by the Higher and Further Education Funding Councils of the UK and the Economic and Social Research Council. Provides links to bibliographic information, publications, subject gateways and data services. Maintained by the Instititute for Learning and Research Technology, University of Bristol. Scholarly Articles Research Alerting provides free email pre-publication announcements of the table of contents of over 450 journals. Skills-insight contains skills and economic intelligence targeted at the South East of England, although it also has some national and international level information. Social construction insights provided by Professor Kenneth Gergen's website. SocioSite is a sociological information system provided by the University of Amsterdam. Take a look at the 'Sociologists' section which gives a helpful introduction to leading sociologists from Addams to Willis. Social Science Information Gateway (SOSIG) describes itself as aiming "to provide a trusted source of selected, high quality Internet information for researchers and practitioners in the social sciences, business and law. It is part of the UK Resource Discovery Network." Social Science Research Network provides access to abstracts of submitted and accepted research papers from around the world. This is an excellent service that contributes to fast dissemination of social science research. There is not currently a specific area for SME/Entrepreneurship papers, but this is a useful place to find SME papers published in accounting, economics, financial and legal journals. A new Management Research Network is planned and this will have an entrepreneurship sub-section. Statsbase is a government sponsored initiative that provides access to UK statistics. This provides helpful information on small businesses in the UK. Strategicassets.co.uk. "This site is an information point for the resource-based approach to company management. It looks at some of the theoretical aspects of the approach..." Strategis.gc.ca provides access to business and consumer information and statistics. This provides information broken down into the following categories: company directories, trade investment, business information by sector, economic analysis, research technology, licences/legislation, employment/learning and consumer information. Technopolis (Innovation Policy Research Associates) is a research and consulting organisation that focuses on science, technology and innovation policy. They provide full versions of a range of their reports in pdf format. Trends Business Research is a research consultancy that uses its large time-series data set to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of businesses, sectors and markets within specified geographies. (UK) Uncoverweb provides access to a database of the contents of "over 18,000 multidisciplinary journals". It provides "brief descriptive information for over 8,800,000 articles which have appeared since Fall 1988. UnCover offers you the opportunity to order fax copies of the articles from this database." |
